Attorney Generals And Federal Agencies
The U.S. Attorney General (AG) is the chief law enforcement officer of the Federal government as the head of the Department of Justice. The position is appointed by the President and sits within the Cabinet that also includes the Vice President and 15 of the President’s top advisors.
The State Attorneys Generals are the primary legal officers for a respective state or territory advising and representing legislature and state agencies acting on behalf of the citizenry.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) is supervised by the U.S. Attorney General. The DOJ oversees Federal enforcement agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Bureau of Prisons, the Office of Justice Programs, the U.S. Attorneys, and the U.S. Marshal’s Service.
Valuable Data Sets From Federal Sources
The data provided from the results of investigative and enforcement activities by these agencies is critical insight for those in the health care industry. Whether in a position of providing care directly to patients, or in proximity to patients via other services, and especially to those in management or ownership of health organizations, this data is valuable. It is an essential best practice to screen and monitor an entire organization’s workforce in order to prevent and mitigate fraud and, especially, to assure patient protection and quality care.
The access to criminal data through this vast array of sources provides the first indicators of criminal activity. Information gathered from the respective Attorney General’s offices plays a critical role because in most cases, this data has not yet filtered down to the licensing boards, credentialing committees, or employers.
Utilizing Federal Data Sets For Health Care Screening
Verisys has been collecting, verifying, and aggregating data from state and Federal AG offices for the past 20 years giving longitudinal views of individuals and entities. Managing this body of data is a separate content acquisition procedure that requires specialized training at Verisys for a proprietary process and data set. Verisys created a standalone database of AG sources and confirms the validity of all of its primary source publishers, extracts and verifies the data on individuals and entities, and matches the record to the individual or entity with 99.9% accuracy.
Only recently have some state AG agencies started to publish data electronically. Verisys is diligent to collect each respective publishing schedule whether the data is on paper, flash drives and CDs received via the mail, or through email and web retrieval. The content specialists at Verisys bring a depth to health care screening and monitoring not found in other credentials verification organizations (CVOs) or data providers.
Utilizing Federal data sets to remove sex offenders, violent criminals, drug and weapons traffickers, and other threatening individuals from the health care industry takes the additional effort and diligence that Verisys offers to its clients via searches of the Fraud Abuse Control Information System (FACIS®) data set, or through CheckMedic®, the turnkey data and technology platform that screens and continuously monitors a health organization’s population.
