New regulations on accessing the Social Security Administration – Death Master File (SSA-DMF) went into effect in November 2016. Unfortunately many organizations underestimated what was entailed in the June 2016 change and are now feeling pressure to be compliant.

1. Organizations must now demonstrate security controls for systems that handle and process DMF data.

2. Mandating that a 3rd-party Accredited Conformity Assessment Body (ACAB) attest to the safeguards being in place. Prior to the June 2016 ruling, organizations could sign their own attestation.

Much of the confusion comes from the fact that NTIS does not provide guidance on how to meet the requirements and offers no recommendation on a ACAB to work with for attestation.

So, although you didn’t get the worm, it’s not too late.
